Im not sure if this is the same Mr Sutcliffe that taught me gcse English at Ashby grammar school from 1992 to 1994 but this comment assumes that he is, my apologies if I’m wrong. Mr Sutcliffe was the most important teacher I ever had. I already loved books and reading, but his lessons really enhanced that and encouraged me to read more widely. I’ll never forget the books that we read in and outside of those lessons, among them Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’urbervilles. He was a big influence on me in terms of what I came to enjoy culturally in adulthood. At one stage I swapped tapes of Queen albums with his son. He was an inspiring teacher and I look back so fondly on those lessons. RIP Mr Sutcliffe
